We were the first company in the country to offer double sided student
response boards. Our original double sided response boards were called
wonderboards. They could be cleaned up no matter what you wrote on
them with. The smooth white markerboard surface could be used with
markers, crayons and grease pencils. The black textured markerboard
surface on the flip side worked great with white or colored chalk. You
could order these boards for your entire school and the teachers that
liked chalk would use the black side and the teachers that were familiar
with dry erase markers would use the white side.
We all know that white
boards now dominate over chalk boards. Schools started asking us to
change our wonderboards to double sided white boards. They knew we manufactured
our products and would be able to do them up with one white side
lined and the other white side unlined. We then began to offer our
boards, double sided, with a "goof-proof" white markerboard
surface on both sides.
What we have found over
the last several years, is that teachers expected double sided dry
erase boards to give them two boards in one. To be twice as good. What teachers actually experienced
was that they would only last half as long. The reason for this is
because most desk tops are now "bullet proof". When a double
sided markerboard surface is used at the desk, the back side can get
scratched by any grain of sand, grit, or other abrasive dust. This is
not an issue when the front side of the board stays the front side.
The problem is when you also use the back side as the front
side. Now both sides get laid against the top of the desk, get
scratched up and ruined. (You could cover the desk top with a
protective cover and place a protective sheet between each dry erase
board for storing, but there must be a better way.)
Double sided dry erase
boards are very tough and strong but they fail when stacked up face to face against each other, or against desk tops.
In February 2000 we removed the option for double sided boards from
our catalog.
The reason we removed them
from our catalog was that everyone who tried our new improved single
sided designs, loved them. All our student Storyboards, Place Value
Boards, and Graph Boards are lined in a soft gray color with a
generous amount of blank unlined space too. Other companies offer lined boards in bold dark colors that make it hard to see the
work the students have done. With our invisi-line technology you can
use these lined boards as unlined boards too. We also are the only
company we know of, that leaves empty space for students to solve
problems before graphing them on the dry erase graph.
